RMCC MEMBER FINISHES THIRD OVERALL IN FAMOUS
BOSTON MONTREAL BOSTON
Mike Fulton, RMCC member, finished third
in overall standings in the 1994 Boston Montreal Boston randonnee,
affectionately known as the "BMB." One hundred thirty riders started
their ride Thursday, August 18, 1994, at 4:00 a.m., but only 87 finished by the
Sunday 10:00 p.m. deadline. Fulton completed his ride in 60 hours 30 minutes and
was the first of four RMCC members to complete his ride. The winning time of 57 hours 19 minutes belongs to John Buttington of Michigan. Members Rex Farnsworth,
John Davis, and Charlie Henderson also competed this year. Farnsworth finished
42nd in overall standings completing his ride in 82 hours 37 minutes. A severely
strained Achilles tendon ended Henderson's ride in Montreal after he suffered sixteen hours of rain covering a distance of 165 miles. Davis' dropped out after
his time passed the limit 40 miles from the finish.
The 750 miles covered in the BMB were accompanied by rain, flash floods and 15%
grades. Riders were required to finish in 90 hours for an official placing.
RMCC BOARD FINALIZES SCHEDULE FOR 1995
The RMCC Board has been busy finalizing
plans for the 1995 cycling season. No details are available yet but topics under
discussion include special "artistic" events and a top secret
challenge ride for 1995! Circle February 4, 1995 as the first ride of the
season. The '95 club jersey order form is on the back page, and its one you will
want to have!
RMCC CELEBRATES ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY
Thank you for helping the RMCC reach its
first anniversary! Without your support we would not be gearing up for next
year! The philosophy of the club continues to be to provide a comprehensive,
progressive, cycling schedule. Whether you ride for fitness, performance,
recreation, or endurance, there will always be a ride to fit your needs!
Your membership this year has entitled you to several discounts, great buys on
Descente shorts, and Avocet products. Some of you even paid for you membership
by winning $20 & $25 gift certificates at the rides. All of this and more
are in store for RMCC members next year!
Renewal forms are on the back of this page. Please take the time to renew your
membership for 1995.
LOCAL ENDURANCE CYCLISTS USE RMCC AS
QUAliFIERS FOR PARIS-BREST PARIS CHALLENGE
by Gary Koenig
The RMCC is promoting a series of
bicycling events in the Boulder- Denver area that can be used by local endurance
cyclists to qualify for the 1995 world-acclaimed Paris- Brest-Paris (P-B-P). The
1200-km (750-mile) tour was first held in France in 1891 and is now held every
four years. Approximately 3,000 cyclists entered in 1991 from around the world,
including 400 from the USA. P-B-P is a RAMM style-event where riding is at will,
stopping and resting only when you must. Requirements include checkpoints along
the way and finishing in 90 hours. The top rider in 1991 and 1987 was an
American, Scott Dickson. In 1991, Dickson finished the ride in 43 hours, 42
minutes.
Riding in a multi-national event results in lasting memories. Many Americans
remember riding after midnight through French villages so small they had no
street lights, yet there were numerous Frenchmen applauding and cheering "Allez"
as the Americans rode by. One Colorado rider who needed a cup of coffee in the
early morning hours was feted, toasted, and practically adopted by a cafe full
of late night revelers who wanted to learn everything about "I'american"
in their midst. The joys of meeting and riding like-minded cyclists from other
countries washes away the agony of the long, hard hours of training that lead up
to the ultimate adventure.
In order to qualify for the event in 1995, riders who have never finished P-B-P
must complete four qualifying "brevets" in both 1994 and 1995. The
brevets are run in a manner similar to the P-B-P, but at shorter distances,
ranging from 200 km (124 miles) to 600 km (372 miles).
This summer RMCC sponsored brevets of 200, 300 400 and 600 km, with more that 25
riders taking part inone or more events. RMCC members successfully completing
the 1994 requirements are: Jane Coury, Mike Fulton, Robert Hoffman, Kathy
Morris, Charles Padgett, John Salisbury, and Ben Staggs. RMCC members finishing
one or more previous P-B-Ps are: Jon Allen, John Ellis, Giselle Hall, Gary
Koenig, Warren McNaughton, and David Walls. Many of these 13 riders will be
attempting to qualify for P-B-P '95 by finishing all four RMCC-sponsored
qualifying brevets this spring.
The 1995 brevet schedule will be coordinated with RMCC weekend rides.
Preliminary dates are: 200 km April 29 or 30; 300 km. May 13 or 14; 400 km June
3 and 4; 600 km June 24 and 25. These dates are subject to change!
Even if you have no desire to go to France for the P-B-P, the Brevet Series
is an extremely enjoyable challenge. Consider making one or more of these events
an integral part of your training program for 1995. For additional information. call Gary Koneig, David Walls. Peggy Reed, Charlie
Henderson, or Barry Nash.
