JEFFERSON COUNTY

Broomfield cyclist killed; driver arrested

A bicyclist was killed Wednesday after a motorist allegedly struck him on Coal Creek Canyon Road southwest of Rocky Flats and then fled.

The bicyclist, Anthony Brandolino, 37, of Broomfield, was flown by helicopter to St. Anthony Central Hospital, where he died from his injuries, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Troopers arrested Robert Gwizdalski a short time after the incident.

He was being detained late Wednesday on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident, and also may face other felony criminal counts, troopers said.

Brandolino was riding his bicycle about 7:40 p.m. on the shoulder of Coal Creek Canyon Road about a mile west of Colorado 93, troopers said. Gwizdalski was driving a 1993 Chevrolet Blazer.
