January 1996

RMCC SELECTED AS OFFICIAL CLUB FOR THE GOOSE CHASE

The RMCC has been selected as the official cycling club for the Greenwood Village Goose Chase. This innovative cycling event will be held on June 22nd and will offer several cycling distances, 7.5 miles, 21 miles, 38 miles, and 62 miles (metric century). At the finale, the riders will be treated to a great lunch and a pro-class criterium. The Greenwood Goose Chase Criterium race is produced by Gravity Storm Racing, a licensed United States Cycling Federation event, and awards a $10,000 cash purse. For those of us with less lofty goals, we can look forward to a great metric century course designed by RMCC's own Charlie Henderson and a full slate of post ride activities.

RMCC ON THE WEB

A complete RMCC schedule of activities is now on the Internet. Our schedule of upcoming events, tours and weekend ride schedules can now be down-loaded or printed on your home computer. Visit us in cyberspace.

ARENA AND AVOCET FOR 1996

Thanks to the efforts of Barry Nash, Arena and Avocet products are available to the members of RMCC at wholesale prices. These super low prices are only available during the first few months of the season. While the rest of the cycling world is sitting on their trainers, this is a great opportunity for BIG savings. These bargains only come once a year, and you don't want to miss your opportunity for 50% savings on top quality merchandise. Check insert for details.

ORDER 1996 JERSEYS NOW

Due to the overwhelming response to our survey last month, the 1996 RMCC jerseys will be Lincoln green. This year's jersey will retain the original design with the exception of the base color, purple, which will be changed to a brilliant green. Voler Sports Apparel has upgraded the quality of the material, so this year's jersey promises to be an excellent product. Order your jersey now for $49.00, or purchase them at the Denver Spoke in June at full retail prices.

February 1996 Issue

AVOCET/DAVE SCOTT ARENA

Time is almost up for the greatest deal that RMCC has to offer. RMCC offers more than 50% discounts on quality clothing and equipment. If you haven't ordered by now, you may miss the savings. Barry Nash has worked long and hard to set up these deals, and many of our members have taken advantage of these savings. However, there is no limit to the size of our order, so order today! All orders must be received by February 15th.

RMCC Requests Volunteers

RMCC needs volunteers for several rides scheduled in 1996. We need three volunteers for the Greenwood Goose Chase on June 22nd, eight volunteers for the Elephant Rock Century on June 2nd, and 20 volunteers for the Denver-Aspen C1assic on July 27th. If you able or willing to give up one day of riding for one of these events, please call Charlie Henderson or Barry Nash.

WE WENT TO PRESS TOO SOON

The 1996 Ride Calendar lists the Colorado Springs Cycling Club's Hardscrabble Century on September 15. This date is incorrect. For those who are interested in doing this very challenging and beautiful ride through the high country above Canyon City, the actual date is September 22. In order to fill the space in our schedule, the steering committee has decided to hold a members' only Team Time Trial on September 15th, and we've tentatively targeted the infamous Morgul-Bismark as the location. So bring your team, or join a team at the ride start location, and enjoy in the fun.

1996 JERSEYS

The 1996 RMCC jerseys are selling like HOTCAKES. The delivery date for the jerseys this year will be in mid-May, and because of that late completion date this will probably be the only order this year. Voler has addressed some of our concerns from last year and is offering a new improved fabric, which resists balling, and the woman's cut jerseys will be two inches longer with deeper pockets. The power purple will be replaced with a vibrant green, but the striking design will remain unchanged.

For People Who Love to Ride

April 1996 Issue

VACATION OF A LIFETIME

Looking for a unique vacation? Participate in the world's toughest race as part of John Hughes' crew this summer in the 1996 Race Across America. John is the only two-time winner of the Furnace Creek 508, the toughest RAAM qualifier, and he won the Boston-Montreal-Boston in 1992. He needs a massage therapist, a mechanic and a nurse or EMT to help on his team. You'd be working with Lee Mitchell, the most experienced crew chief in RAAM. The Race starts August 1 in Irvine, California and will finish about August 11 in Savannah Georgia. Contact John.

John's budget for the RAAM is $10,000 for crew expenses, gas for three vans, motels, race food, and supplies. He would very much appreciate donations from his fellow members of the RMCC to help offset the cost.

ARENA/AVOCET Discount Offer

After receipt of three partial orders from Avocet and numerous follow-up calls to Arena, we are still awaiting a couple saddles, two tires and a few shorts and socks. Most orders have been filled and are ready for pickup. Please contact Barry Nash at any of the Saturday rides or call him to make other arrangements. We're hoping to finalize all back-ordered merchandise by the end of April. If we are unable to obtain anything you've requested, refund checks will be mailed. Our apologies for the delays. Thank you for all your patience.

MEMORIAL WEEKEND TOUR

Details are coming together for the May 25 - 27 Memorial Weekend Tour .The ride begins in Idaho Springs and ends in Twin Lakes on Saturday. Riders will have the option of sleeping, hiking, or riding to the top of Independence Pass, or even on into Aspen and back, on Sunday. The return ride to Idaho Springs is on Monday. Two great overnights and dinners, are scheduled at the historical Twin Lakes Nordic Inn. The cost will be approximately $125 for two nights lodging and SAG support. Spaces are still available but filling up fast. To reserve a spot, send a non-refundable check for $25 made out to RMCC, %Barry Nash. Call Barry for further information.

COLORADO CONTRAIL

RMCC's eight day vacation on a bike is coming up soon. This 900-mile tour starts in Denver with overnights in Leadville, Redstone, Ouray for two nights, Durango for two nights and the last night will be in Chama. The final leg of the tour will be done via SAG from La Veta. The registration deadline is June 8. For more information call Charlie Henderson.

DENVER-ASPEN CLASSIC

Behind the scenes, the planning for the Denver-Aspen Classic is well underway. Like last year, the RMCC is looking for volunteers to man the support stations. Last year's volunteers were absolutely fantastic; take it from one of the grateful riders. Many of those wonderful volunteers are returning, but we are still in need of a few more hardy souls. If you are unable to ride, please join the volunteer group, and enjoy the efforts of some of Colorado's true cycling enthusiasts.

Hotels in Aspen are difficult to book for a single day, but the RMCC has reserved 20 rooms at the Inn at Aspen in Aspen- Buttermilk, three miles west of downtown Aspen on Highway 82. Reservations must be made prior to June 28th, but take it from a veteran of Denver-Aspen, these rooms go fast. So if you're riding or volunteering, call for reservations as soon as possible. Contact Suzanne MacGill at Rocky Mountain Bicycle Vacations.

JUNE 3RD MEETING WILL BE OPEN FORUM FOR LONG-DISTANCE RIDERS

Members who are interested in doing their first Boston-Montreal-Boston or Paris-Brest-Paris and would like some insight into these long-distance events are invited to come and talk to some of Colorado's best ultra-marathon cyclists on June 3rd. The meeting will be held at 7:30 in the evening at Joe Lookingbill's home at 13055 Emerson Street, Thornton. Call Joe for directions. The meeting will be very informal and will give the members an opportunity for one-on-one discussions with riders like John Hughes, John Lee Ellis, Charlie Henderson, Barry Nash, Gary Koenig, and others. Their experience in the Boston-Montreal-Boston and the Paris-Brest-Paris could prove to be invaluable to the long-distance cyclist.

As always RMCC meetings are open to all members who want to get involved with the normal day-to-day running of the fastest growing club in Colorado. We are proud of our accomplishments in the few short years we've been in existence. RMCC needs the input of all members to help create a club that will serve enthusiastic cyclists.
