Foon Feldman

I updated the PBP19 Colorandonnee spreadsheet with unofficial results from the track.rtrt.me website. If I have it right:

- 18 registrants
- 17 starters
- 13 finishers

Some of my stats:
I did not have my bike computer on, so I made some guesses about my elapse time.

  • 48:45 on bike; 15.5 mph average
  • 31:40 off bike at controls and optional services
  • 1:24 off bike between controls
(I had two flats and another rider that I was willing to stop and help had two. For various reasons, three of these took a long time to fix.) Notable experiences that I expected:
  • Incredible support from the locals, both official volunteers and bystanders
  • Lots of strong riders
  • Very few riders good at riding in groups, but I found a few and stayed with them
  • A little basic French helped a lot; at least it made me feel better -- except when a reply came in rapid French that I couldn't understand :-0
  • Cold nighttime temperatures
  • I was very happy to forego a drop bag or any other personal services
  • My ride plan allowed me to stay away from crowds and not wait in queues
The unexpected:
  • The amount of walking at controls
  • The variance among the dorm facilities. The bed at Tintiniac in a quad-occupancy room was very nice
  • Very little conversation among riders
  • Almost no packaged food for sale to take for eating while rolling
  • The control restaurants had great choices that enabled me to eat a lot but also led to a lot of time off the bike
  • The whole event was more festive and more of a jamboree than I expected
John Mangin

I will echo some of the points Foon made:
  • I had a difficult time finding groups to work with
  • Riding with Pascal and Mike is always a pleasure, that goes without saying!
  • All of the support from the locals is likely my favorite thing about PBP
  • The mornings were cold!
  • I had a single drop bag and that worked fine for me
  • The controls were crowded but I typically managed to get what I needed expediently
  • I never waited to have my card stamped and signed
  • For me the 90 hour start is difficult due to the sleep management
  • Villaines-la-Juhel continues to be my favorite control anywhere (no offence to Sandy's!)
  • The volunteers are consistently fantastic!
Overall another fantastic running, congratulations to everyone who rode.

Thank you Foon for compiling the results.

I rode with Nate and Ray in the 84 hour start and we did a good job of hanging on to the big German and Danish groups during the first 200km, though these groups would splinter rapidly once a climb started.

Once things settled down we had our own efficient group among the 3 of us with a lot of hangers-on. That said, the relentless terrain and energy/focus to stay in a fast group was not something I am used to and definitely added to the fatigue.

We did spend a lot of time in controls but we were constantly hungry and seemed to eat a full meal at every stop, but the lines seemed pretty efficient, possibly due to being in the 84 hour group.

Beyond the amazing hospitality and beautiful scenery, it was fun running into so many people from RMCC and friends from other clubs.

Here are my bullet points ...
  • Loved the bright, mild, sunny (starry at night) weather.
  • Nice to have new route segments; felt like there was a bit more climbing.
  • Rambouillet start/finish route was easier, but venue itself more troublesome (cobbles, etc.). ACP did their best.
  • ACP and their volunteers again pulled off the miracle of supporting 6,000 riders in fine form.
  • Seemed like fewer upright trikes, recumbents, and faired recumbents (HPVs aka "velomobiles") than in recent years.
  • Ham sandwich diet during the day (with occasional Coke and pain chocolat) worked well for me.
  • Great to run into members of our group on a regular basis, and chat over an espresso or sandwich, or riding along.

    Closing reflection:

  • Proud to be one of our 17-rider cohort - one of the largest in the country - who trained diligently and enthusiastically, and then did their best at PBP.
